In Photoshop

On this photo, I used Contrast to make the photo stand out more and allow Alice's features to be clearer. As well as this, I used the Clone Stamp to fade out the grass a little so that the writing would stand out once it had been put on. 

To this photo, I needed to sort out the background above Alice's head. Therefore, I used the Clone Stamp to add trees behind. This was so that her hair would not be washed out by the brightness of the sky. 

Into InDesign

In order to create a double page spread, there needs to be different settings to the Front cover and Contents page. Therefore I changed the settings to be an A3 paged and in Landscape .

After using the Place tool to put the photo-shopped photo of Alice as the background, I decided to create the  'Exclusive Banner' that is shown in my Research and Sketching. The sizes of the rectangle are shown above.

 To ensure that the sign of 'Exclusive' stood out, I wanted to make sure the font was a bold font so therefore, I choose to use STENCIL ST.  

Knowing that the colour of the backing for 'Exclusive' should be RED, I set the dials as shown in the shot above using Colour Picker.

Using the Group tool, I was then able to put the 'Exclusive' on top of the RED rectangle. This meant that it would stay in place and I would be able to put effects on it if I wanted to later on. 

 

Next, I wanted to Insert the photos onto my page. I did this using the Place tool. At first, I tried them out placing them on the bottom left hand side of the page.

The next stage was to insert the text. I started to use the Guitar on the page to see if it looked effective. I wrote out the article in full before inserting it onto the page. I decided to use an Interview for my writing. Here, is the use of Three columns. I kept the font BLACK to ensure professionalism and made sure the writing was clear. 

A feature I have noticed on many different articles is the use of the first letter of the article being larger font then everything else. This is what is shown here. 

I put the font as ERAS DEMI IT, as it is a font that stands out and became clear with my background. 

To ensure the questions of the article stand out more, I made the the font of ERAS BOLD ITC. This was so it stood out from the other writing but still stayed as a similar font.

Shown above is the Quote I want to enlarge and use on my page. I will need to change the design in order to find where the quote looks the best.

I changed the positioning of the photographs to correspond with my design of magazine. I Placed the photos on the left hand side of the page like shown. 

I moved the quote above the writing to look professional and it corresponds with my NME research.

Using Photoshop

In my opinion, the photo of Nakita was nearly right. The only effect I used was to increase the contrast of the photo. This enables the model to stand out.

Since the photos of Rob were very dark, I decided to use the Brush tool in order to make the background WHITE. I also used the Magic Wand tool to select the glasses in order to make them BLACK. This ensured that they did not blend into the background. I used the Export tool to make the images JPEG's. 

Into INDESIGN

Next, I began to plan the look of my contents page.

Looking at my previous research, I saw that most of the contents pages I looked at had headings such as 'WHATS NEW' and 'LIVE'. Therefore, I was keen to adapt this into my work by using the headings of 'WEEKLY/THIS WEEK', 'WHATS NEW', 'FEATURES', 'LIVE' AND 'PLUS'. Under these I was then able to put my pages. To ensure that the page numbers stand out, I made the colour of the numbers RED. 

For the title of the contents page, I wanted to make a box to insert the text into. At first, I was keen for it to be RED so that it would stand out on the page. However, on further thought and looking at my research, I decided to make the box BLACK and the writing WHITE which would ensure that it would stand out on the page without drawing attention away from the writing. 

To ensure that the headings stood out. I decided to make the writing of them WHITE with the background of BLACK which would be the same as the title so therefore, go well on the page. As well as this, at this stage, I prepared the typing for my photos. I put the names of 'Rob Rutnam' and 'Nakisha Pattni' in the font BROADWAY. This is so it would stand out. 

 

Using the Place tool, I inserted the photo of Nakita and also Placed a mini version of the front cover of my magazine. I had to place the writing in different places in order to make it look clear next to the photo.

Using the Place tool once again, I inserted the image of Rob. Then, on the boxes of the headings, I used the effect of Drop Shadow  in order to create a more 3D look.   

To try and make the pages and their sections look more professional. I put the main point of band of each page and put in in BOLD in order to make the most important factors stand out to the reader. 

Wanting to use a Different Font, I decided to make the font of the page headings CALIBRI as it looked professional and clear. 

Shown Below is an idea I took from one of the magazines on my 'Contents Research'

Using the idea of the RED meant I knew that this box would stand out. I think having this within the contents page promotes a connection between the magazine and the reader. It is a feature I have seen in a lot of magazines. Including Fashion ones such as 'LOOK' magazine. I liked the idea of it as it made my Contents Page more personal. 

I wanted to change the background so it was not plain WHITE. So therefore, I took the background colour of my Front Cover and made the contents page the same with the intention of adding a Gradient later on. This colours number's are shown above. 

I made the font on the 'Editor' VIVALDI so that it looked like hand writing. This is a feature which I adapted from the example I took from the research. I think its a special technique that makes the magazine more professional.

Thinking about my design of the page, I decided I would rather create a smaller size title and put my Editor feature next to it. This made it look fuller. 

Here, I decided again to change my positioning on the page. I also decided that I wanted to make the boxes of my titles bigger like shown her. I used the Group tool again. I think the bigger boxes fills the page more.

Next, I wanted to change the Font of the writing around the photo of Rob. I changed it to BELL GOTHIC STD so that it stood out from other fonts on the page and I wanted to ensure that I used a variety of fonts through my pages.

I again used the effect of the Drop Shadow for each box to ensure that page looks more exciting and full. 

To make the background look better, I used the Gradient Swatch tool. This meant that the page looked less dull. 

Lastly, I decided to put an effect of bevel and emboss on my editor box in order to give it a 3D effect.

USING PHOTOSHOP:

To control the background, i used the blur tool. It was extremely hard for me to do this successfully in order to make the whole background white because after backcombing Alice's hair, it meant that is was very hard for me to make the edges around Alice's head flawless.

Next, I needed to create a new layer of Alice's head therefore, I cropped it and used the clipping path tool to get her head by itself. This allowed me to place her head in front of the title creating a 3D effect.

Still using Photoshop, I inserted the photo behind the text and then inserted the photo of head on top to create my 3D effect. 

This was the result of the 3D effect. The use of the clipping path allowed me to make it look more realistic. I exported this as a photo so I could place it into InDesign.

Taking the idea from 'Spin' magazine, I made a design for my front cover which shows which artists are featuring inside the magazine this week. I liked this idea as using artists names allows me to emphasise that 'Sidetrack' is a music magazine. I used the font Britannia bold throughout so that my magazine would remain consistent. 

Using InDesign:

I wanted to make sure Alice's name stood out on the cover. Therefore, I created a rectangle and coloured it BLACK as it corresponded with my colour scheme and would allow it to stand out. I placed the white writing on top and used the Group tool to ensure that it would remain in the position I wanted. 

Next, I wanted to create a quote for Alice which would be seen later on in the magazine. To make this writing stand out, I made it the colour RED. As well as this, I used the effects Satin and put an outer glow on the writing. This ensured that it did not look dull and made sure it stood out on the page. 

When I had positioned the name and quote for Alice, I decided to insert the bar code in the bottom left corner and according to my previous research, bar codes are always put on the corner of a page. 

I wanted to create a circular advertisement as, being a regular reader of magazines, it is a regular feature used on many magazines. To make the feature stand out more i used the effect of Bevel and Emboss which would give it a more 3D effect.

Knowing that the tickets for the festival of Reading and Leads were soon to be out, I decided to add a competition to win tickets on my magazine. I mad the circle RED to ensure it stood out and the writing WHITE so it is clear. I wanted the words to be clear within the circle therefore used Gill Sans Ultra Bold.

Lastly, I put the issue and the date onto the magazine making it more realistic. Ensuring I used a different font, I used Hobo STD and using a BLACK font, it meant that the date and issue were clear but would not draw any attention away from the important features of the cover.
